Vomo Island Spa

This project is the new resort spa on Vomo Island, Fiji.  The first phase included two double treatment rooms, a reception area and a central courtyard. The site is in a thick stand of shading trees and coconut palms in the center of the islands peninsula, away from the beach. The history books talk about Vomo as a haven for early shipping expeditions. Today, it is a botanical haven and a natural oasis making it a perfect setting for a spa.

Locally sourced volcanic rock walls, water gardens, botanical gardens, and folded roofs are arranged around a raised wooden platform. The traditional big roof of the Pacific region, designed to capture cooling sea breezes, is reinterpreted and reinvigorated by contemporary geometry. The courtyard, less common in the Pacific, is re-worked in its new context. It is used not only to mediate the climatic environment but to build on the idea of a calm and secluded tropical oasis.
